Went to Nagasaki this weekend. The site of the second atomic bomb. Going to museums here is such a different experience from America. In America, going into a museum can be sensory overload. In Japan, you get the traditional minimalism. Sometimes I wish Japanese museums simply had more.. more stuff. But you can't help getting the point.
Hundreds of thousands of lives lost. People who were simply in their homes nursing their babies, or students studying at school. While it is true that many of the children were evacuated from the cities during this time (I believe) there were still many victims (including some European prisoners of war) left who, if they didn't die immediately from the effects of the blast, were to die later of radiation sickness.

When are we all gonna learn to just get along? Is it that hard, folks? I don't know. I'm not trying to sound elitist here like I've got the golden ticket to peace or something. I mean, getting along with our friends, relatives and neighbors is work. But can't we do better than this?
I wonder what life must be like being a schoolkid or a housewife in Iraq right about now....

Hi DMB,
I think we all are guilty of allowing our governments to do things in our name that we don't agree with.
I suppose it's easy to become complacent when your life is not on the line.
Even now there are people in Guantanamo Bay who are being held, in our name, without charge. And as quiet as it's kept some of those being held are American citizens.
Nagasaki and Hiroshima were as shocking in their time (and after) as 9-11 was, and is.
I have always believed that the most dangerous people seek the power in every society, with few exceptions.
Barack Obama is the only presidential candidate I have actually wanted to vote for in my lifetime, which is a pretty poor average as I am considerably older than he is.
What is there in the human genetic structure that blinds so many of us to the fact that we are all related, and that when we help one another it is better for everyone?
I agree with you completely, yet I must say in response to "When are we all gonna learn to just get along? ..... But can't we do better than this?", sadly, we apparently can not. I don't understand why. A long as men have to feel "on top" it will continue. So very sad.
"Can't we all get along"....I don't know how many times I've wished that we could just all get along. It seems as if we fight over trivial things. The ones who instigate the fighting are never in harms way. Who gets hurt? Innocent bystanders. Instead of placing all of this energy into educating our youth, they spawn war. It's depressing...What is this world coming too...
I remember the first time I read in detail about about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I was in a middle school history class and I started crying because it was so horrible.
It was the second time I'd cried because I'd already teared up talking about concentration camps. The teacher got annoyed that I cried and I never forgot it. It always struck me that that hardening of the heart, that coldness, is what allows these things horrible things to be perpetuated.
I just saw this documentary about the continued consequences of Agent Orange in Vietnam--generations of lives shattered because of some chemicals our Government used. The more you look the more you find...either we do something or become totally overwhelmed and immobilized...
Interesting post especially with what's going on in Japan now with that Military guy and little girl...
I could not imagine living in Iraq as such, and that as a beautiful monument, i wote a post a while back on the aniversary, when i find it will send u the link
I agree, but simply put, it would be too much like right for people to just get along..We live in a confused world who's views have been corrupted.
Sometimes it seems like one big pissing contest among men and people/civilizations pay the price for ego, vanity and hubris.
It gets to be really depressing at times. I advocate for more civic mindedness among people in holding our leaders accountable.
An informed public might just make some serious changes in the way the world does business.
War...what is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.
That song said it best.
At some point, it would seem how people would understand how violence only brings about more violence.
Our world would be far better if we spent more time remembering tragic periods in our past. The point is not to wallow, but to keep from repeating mistakes and atrocities. Sadly, it seems we never learn.
